Network Visualizer
A native OCI service that provides a diagram of the implemented topology of virtual cloud networks and subnets with routing and security layouts within a region.
The problem
Network engineers faced increasing challenges in managing the complexity of their cloud infrastructure. As organizations scaled their operations across regions, the infrastructure became more dynamic, distributed, and opaque. Traditional text-based configuration tools and static diagrams were no longer sufficient for understanding real-time topology, identifying misconfigurations, or ensuring compliance and security.
To address these challenges, the networking team at OCI sought a solution that would provide an interactive, up-to-date visual representation of a customer's cloud network infrastructure. The Network Visualizer service would improve operational visibility, accelerate decision-making, and reduce the potential for costly errors.
My impact
- Conducted multiple user interviews with networking architects and engineers to capture feedback on what topology mappings would assist customers in troubleshooting network issues.
- Held white boarding sessions with fellow UX team members to rough out potential topologies and canvas functionality.
- Worked closely with the product team to define feature scope.
- Designed each topology layout and the canvas interactions for the region, VCN and subnet layers.
- Designed a new network resource UI design system.
- Validated designs with networking architects and engineers and iterated on feedback before going live.
Meaningful results
Customers sucessfully adopted using Network Visualizer to troubleshoot their networking configuration issues before contacting support.
This resulted in a reduction on the amount of support tickets that were submitted for basic networking configuration issues as covered in the write ups: Announcing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Network Visualizer and Enhanced visualization and troubleshooting with Network Visualizer 2.0.
